Veronica Justus, 25, of Milwaukee, and Anthony Murphy, 29, of South Beloit, Illinois, are both charged with felony misappropriating identification information to obtain money as a party to a crime and misdemeanor theft as a party to a crime.
Justus was in police custody on a $2,000 signature bond as of Monday, according to online court records.
A $5,000 arrest warrant was issued for Murphy on May 3, according to court documents. As of Monday, he was still at large.
On Dec. 21, Mount Pleasant Police Department officers were sent to a business in the 6500 block of Washington Avenue after reports of a theft from a vehicle, according to the criminal complaint.
A man reportedly told police that he parked his car about 5:30 a.m., and when he returned at 6:30 a.m., a window was broken.
Several items also were reported as missing, including a woman’s purse, which contained credit and debit cards, a driver’s license and cash, according to the complaint.
On Dec. 27, another woman told police that she’d received notice of fraudulent activity related to her bank account. She said six checks were deposited into an account and money was withdrawn without her consent.
The bank confirmed the loss was $15,000, the complaint said, and that the fraudulent checks were deposited at branches in Milwaukee and Waukesha counties Dec. 22-23.
The bank provided surveillance footage to the police, which reportedly showed a woman with dark hair, a man with facial tattoos and a Jeep.
Police learned that a similar vehicle was used in connection to an alleged theft in Vernon Hills, Illinois.
A vehicle with the same license plate was stopped in Troy, Michigan, in January, the complaint said, and Murphy was identified as the driver. A passenger in another vehicle pulled over with the Jeep was identified as Justus.…Read more by Holly Gilvary, holly gilvary
