How hot will it get in Illinois?
The Climate Prediction Center predicts the chance for temperatures to be above average in June, July and August to be anywhere from 33% to 40%.
As for what a typical summer weather day is in Illinois, the University of Illinois state climatologist office says highs are usually in the 80s with lows in the 60s. Days above 90 degrees are more common the further south in the state, where that total per year ranges from 10 days to 40 days.
While they are less common, Rockford and Chicago have already had multiple 90 degree-plus days this week with more likely. Temps in Springfield and Peoria also approached record highs on June 16 and June 17.
How much will it rain this summer?
Those hoping to rely on Mother Nature’s help to avoid watering the grass this summer should probably keep on hoping. Outside of a sliver of southern Illinois, the majority of the state will not receive any additional precipitation than normal according to the NWS.
This holds consistent with data from the state climatologist. Northern parts of the state, on average, receive 32 inches of precipitation per year while portions of southern Illinois can receive more than 48 inches of rain.
Through May, NWS found Springfield and Peoria had received nearly an extra inch of precipitation compared to the city’s average since 2000.
