The Greensboro Six

Greensboro is a city deeply devoted to honoring its history through public art. That tradition continued recently when a huge, colorful mural was unveiled at Gillespie Golf Course to honor the Greensboro Six.

These brave civil rights pioneers defiantly played on the city’s whites-only golf course in 1955, an action which eventually opened the links to all players. Their victory created opportunities for Black golfers across the country.

Another exciting but little-known local story — from way back in Revolutionary history — also deserves to be told. Forty-six Black patriots fought in the Battle of Guilford Courthouse on March 15, 1781. If you visit the Guilford Courthouse National Military Park, the rangers will tell you their names. A mural to honor Black Revolutionary participation would fit right in with the city’s art-and-history-loving tradition.…Read more by
