According to Letts in a Vanity Fair interview, his wedding with Coon took place after he had an emergency gallbladder surgery. Letts mentioned that the night before his surgery, he and Coon had been preparing to go to the courthouse to get married until he was plagued by pains. After his surgery, Coon, who had arrived at the hospital, found a Lutheran chaplain and had him officiate her and Letts’ wedding, which the latter called “a lovely, intimate, and personal ceremony.”
Letts received a 2008 Pulitzer Prize Award for Drama for his play August: Osage County. He also bagged a Tony Award for his performance as George in the Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf? revival. Aside from this, Letts is also known for his performance of Andrew Lockhart in the third and fourth seasons of Homeland. As a screenwriter, Letts wrote the screenplays for the films Bug, Killer Joe, and August: Osage County, all of which had been adapted from his own plays.

According to Carrie Coon in a Late Night with Seth Meyers interview, they had gotten their marriage license in Illinois. This license stipulated that their marriage had to take place within 60 days of registering, or they would need to go back to City Hall to re-register.
Coon joked in the interview that her husband “was so high” and that “his gown was slightly off the shoulder.”
Carrie Coon confirmed she and Letts were expecting their first child in January 2018 via X (formerly Twitter). They then gave birth to their first child, a son named Haskell, two months later, in March 2018. Haskell’s birth details were confirmed in county records obtained by the Chicago Tribune.
