College Football Playoff hopefuls meet in a top-10 showdown when No. 3 Texas heads to the Big House to take on No. 10 Michigan on Saturday afternoon.
The defending national champions took a while to hit their stride in a 30-10 Week 1 victory over Fresno State. The offense mostly resembled a unit breaking in a new quarterback — redshirt junior Davis Warren — and an entirely new offensive line. Warren, drawing the start over sophomore Alex Oriji, went 15-of-25 for 118 yards, one touchdown, and one interception.
On the other hand, Michigan’s defense looked eerily similar to the unit that dominated college football last year, spurring a perfect 15-0 season. Junior cornerback Will Johnson, a projected All-American, sealed the game with an 86-yard pick six late in the fourth quarter.
The Wolverines will need similar playmaking to defeat Texas, which looked crisp in a 52-0 beatdown of Colorado State on Saturday. Quinn Ewers began his third season in style, throwing for 260 yards, three touchdowns, and one interception. Receiver Isaiah Bond — an Alabama transfer — looked at home, reeling in a team-high five catches for 61 yards and a touchdown.
