Gastonia excess trash week is coming up

Here are some do’s, dont’s and friendly reminders.

Put your unwanted excess household items at the curb in front of your home the night before your usual trash pick-up day.

According to a press release from the city, residents who put their excess trash out too soon before pick-up can incur fees.

Items like furniture, mattresses, lawn mowers and other types of excess trash that will not fit in a customer’s garbage cart are welcome, the release said.

According to the release, some items that do not qualify for excess trash week include automobile or engine parts, including batteries, dirt, rocks, bricks, ceramic tile or similar construction debris, liquids, poisons or explosives, and paint cans that contain wet paint.

The release said those items must be taken to the Gaston County Landfill for proper disposal.

Although most excess household trash is picked up for free during free trash week, some fees do apply to certain items.

For appliances and electronics with a cord, a $25 fee will be charged upon pick-up, the release said.

There is also a fee for tires.

The city charges a fee for those items because they cannot go to the landfill, it said.

The release also reminds residents that the city collects used paint cans year-round at not charge as long as they have been filled with sand or cat litter.…Read more by Diane Turbyfill
