CHATHAM COUNTY, Ga. (WTOC) – Over 500,000 people in Georgia are still without power following massive impacts from Hurricane Helene.
Georgia Power is estimating that power will be restored in our area by Tuesday at 10 p.m. which is still more than 24 hours away.
64,000 people in Chatham County alone are waking up in the dark Monday morning… 13,000 folks in Effingham, and 3,000 people in Bryan County.
It’s a frustrating situation all around but Georgia Power crews have been working all weekend long to get power restored in these areas.
Detric Leggett, the Alderman for Savannah District 2, says that the restoration times are an estimate but some folks may see power restored before 10 p.m. Tuesday.
“We have gracious power friends that came in from different areas. We have Florida power, we have Alabama power, and we have our own Georgia power that’s here, working diligently, working 24 hours a day, just to make sure. They’re working 16 hour shifts so if you do see any of our power partners out there, be courteous to them, offer them something if you can, but they are working diligently and they’re working along hours to make sure our customers and constituents have the power they need.”
Power outages are continuing in South Carolina days after Hurricane Helene left a path of damage throughout the Southeast.
Statewide in South Carolina there’s about 700,000 thousand people are still without power.
Hampton County has around 3,000 people are still without power, while Jasper County has around 2,000. Beaufort County also has close to 3,000 people without power Monday morning.
Dominion customers in Hampton should expect power back by Thursday at 11 p.m. while Jasper and Beaufort customers are looking at Wednesday.
Beaufort customers are looking at Tuesday except on Daufuskie Island. Dominion says due to the extent of the damage over there, they don’t have an estimated restoration time yet.
