Democracies today face continuously evolving threats from the rise of savvy autocrats and the spread of authoritarian ideas and investments. Despite democracy offering greater security and fostering more equitable societies, an increasing number of countries are experiencing backsliding each year. Democratic regression and authoritarian collaboration pose existential risks to democracy, security, and human rights worldwide.
In recognition of these threats, the International Foundation for Electoral Systems (IFES) founded the Democratic Resilience Lab, a hub for research and collaboration across the international democracy support community. This event marks the launch of the Lab and features authors of its recent publications: “Paths to Democratic Resilience in an Era of Backsliding” and “Understanding and Interrupting Modern-Day Authoritarian Collaboration.”
