MILWAUKEE (WTMJ) – A Milwaukee woman is fighting for her life after getting caught in the middle of a drag race while crossing the street over the weekend.
Chris Schulist is Cara Corder’s boss and friend. He’s clinging to every bit of good news he can find.
“She moved her arm today. She moved her leg today,” Schulist said.
Schulist can still picture the horror he witnessed Saturday just outside his bar on Kinnickinnic Avenue.
“I’m just glad she’s not dead because, really, I could have been standing over her dead body in the street that day,” Schulist said.
Corder was struck around 2:30 a.m. on Saturday.
Police say two cars were racing when the crash happened.
“The people that hit her just didn’t stop, didn’t even blink, didn’t even stop. They just kept going,” Schulist said.
Corder was crossing the street when the two cars came down the road, one apparently on the wrong side, according to Schulist. The two cars collided and Corder was then hit.
“People were stopping traffic so she wouldn’t get hit again,” Schulist remembered.
The terrifying situation has Schulist and his neighbors raising the alarm on reckless driving.
“I’ve seen cars get completely smashed, and then the drivers back off and drive away,” Brian Redd, who lives close by, said.
Redd says it’s an issue that’s been going on for years without resolution.
“At a certain time of night, it’s kind of anarchy. Anything goes and that’s Kinnikinic Avenue. It’s wide open. It’s very quiet and there’s no police presence, and I don’t know why,” Redd added.
“I‘d love to see somebody parked on this corner at night, where they know there’s a cop sitting here and they know, ’Hey, we better not go down that road fast because there’s a cop sitting there.’ That would be fantastic,” Redd said.
Schulist wants additional measures, beginning with a speedbump, with hopes to spare others from a fate that Corder is still fighting to overcome.
“Really, you need something here,” Schulist said. “If they’re going 70 mph, it’s going to mess up they’re cars. That’s the only way it’s going to stop them.”
