VIVONNE BAY, South Australia, March 30, 2026 – Little Sahara Adventure Centre, a family-owned ecotourism operator at Vivonne Bay on Kangaroo Island, has launched a dedicated school excursion program built around the sand dune system at Little Sahara. The program pairs hands-on outdoor activities with structured learning across geology, biodiversity, sustainability, and field skills, and is open to groups of 10 or more students across primary and secondary year levels.
The dune system at Little Sahara spans more than 2.5 square kilometres, with formations reaching up to 70 metres above sea level. Classed as a Significant Australian Heritage Geological Monument in 1979, the site provides natural teaching stations for erosion, wind-driven landform processes, gradient comparison, and vegetation cover. Schools can use the terrain for practical fieldwork including sketch mapping, surface texture comparison, and weather observation.
The excursion packages offer four core activity streams that can be combined or rotated to suit different year levels and group sizes.
Sandboarding and tobogganing sessions allow students to test slope angles, compare speed across different sand conditions, and observe cause and effect in real time. Safety briefings, helmet fitting, and marked safe zones are standard across all sessions.
Guided buggy tours cover a wider area, moving between dune faces, coastal terrain, and bushland edges. Short stops are built in for landform observation and guided discussion on deposition, scouring, and habitat transition. Koala sightings are frequently observed on buggy tours through the surrounding bushland, supporting biology-focused learning on habitat needs and animal behaviour.
Electric fat bike tours offer a lower-impact option for exploring the dune environment. Wide-tyre bikes spread ground pressure and provide motor assistance for mixed fitness levels, and the format introduces concepts around access management, transport impact, and shared-use principles in ecotourism settings.
Wildlife-focused guided walking tours take a slower pace, with students tracking animal signs including footprints, burrows, and feeding activity. These sessions suit observational learners and support place-based teaching on native flora and fauna, adaptation, and human impact near dune margins.
“The dunes do a lot of the teaching on their own,” said Brenton Davis, Director, Little Sahara Adventure Centre. “Students arrive expecting a fun day out and end up asking serious questions about how landscapes change and why they need protecting.”
Each program incorporates safety and sustainability as active curriculum themes. The centre’s team manages safety briefings, gear fitting, and SmartWaiver administration so teachers can remain focused on their groups throughout the day. Supervision ratios require a minimum of one teacher or approved leader per activity group.
