Susan L. DeCort, known as Sue by her loved ones, passed away peacefully Thursday, Jan. 2, 2025, at the Hospice House in Youngstown, at the age of 72. Born on Dec. 29, 1952, in Salem, Ohio, she was the daughter of Charles and Sally (Davies) Cubbage.
A 1971 graduate of Salem High School, Sue dedicated her life to her family as a devoted housewife. Her passion for caring for others was evident in the simple yet profound act of sending cards that contained many stickers. Whether it was for someone sick, suffering, or simply to brighten someone’s day, Sue’s cards were a beacon of kindness and compassion. Her commitment to this ministry through Greenford Lutheran Church was a reflection of her caring nature and her desire to support her community in times of need.
Sue’s love for animals was unparalleled, and she shared her home with two beloved Old English Sheepdogs, Willow and Nellie. Her nurturing spirit extended to her role as a Sunday school teacher, where she touched the lives of many children. Her philosophy of life was to cherish every moment; she lived by the mantra that every day was “the best day of her life.” She loved her daily walks up and down the driveway, always excited to discover the latest little treasure from Amazon, that brought a smile to her face. Her zest for life was contagious, and she was known to savor the sweetness of life, often indulging in dessert first.
An avid doll collector, Sue found joy in the simple pleasures of life. She and her husband shared many happy moments cruising in his red convertible, enjoying the wind in their hair and the taste of ice cream on sunny afternoons. These cherished times were among the countless memories they created together.
Left to cherish her memory are her children, Jennifer (Ed) Schaefer, Jayne (Jason Datko) DeCort. Her grandchildren, Evan (Sarah) Schaefer, Luke (Katelyn Levis) Schaefer, and Meagan DeCort, will forever hold her in their hearts, as will her great-grandchildren, Grace and Anna Schaefer. Sue is also survived by her sister-in-law, Mary Jean Cubbage, brother-in-law, Randy Bentley, her dear dogs Willow and Nellie, and a host of loving family members, nieces, and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, John Charles DeCort, whom she married on Jan. 22, 1972; sister, Carol Bentley; brother, Bill Cubbage, and her cherished pets, Puddin and Porkchop.
Friends and family are invited to gather in remembrance of Sue’s extraordinary life at Greenford Lutheran Church, 7450 W. South Range Road, Salem, OH 44460, on Wednesday, Jan. 8, 2025, from 10 a.m. until the time of the service at 11 a.m., with Pastor Josh Ruiter officiating. Sue will be laid to rest at Grandview Cemetery in Salem.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Greenford Lutheran Church to contribute towards the card ministry she loved so much.
