A federal judge has heard competing testimony over a request to block the nation’s fourth execution using nitrogen gas. Demetrius Terrence Frazier is scheduled to be executed Feb. 6 in Alabama for a woman’s 1991 rape and murder in Birmingham. Frazier’s attorneys argued Tuesday that the new execution method doesn’t work as the state promised. A doctor who witnessed a nitrogen gas execution also testified the last inmate executed appeared in distress. The state maintains the method is constitutional and swiftly causes death. Frazier’s mother urged Michigan’s governor to seek his return there to finish his life sentence there for a separate murder conviction in a 14-year-old girl’s death.…Read more by AFP
