The Agriguigou Agricultural Cooperative in the Guigou commune has initiated an ambitious project for sprouting barley and converting it into high-quality fodder, funded by the Chamber of Agriculture of the Fez-Meknes region. This pioneering initiative the first of its kind in the province offers a promising alternative to traditional feed, particularly amid climate changes affecting the availability of natural pasture.

According to a reliable source, the barley sprouting project employs an advanced technique that enables the production of multiple batches of fodder in just one week. Every 26 kilograms of barley grains yield 160 kilograms of fresh fodder, providing a sustainable solution for farmers and livestock breeders, particularly during periods of pasture scarcity.

The same source explained that the success of this project relies on specialized sprouting units that create an optimal environment with controlled humidity, lighting, and temperature eliminating the need for soil. This method allows for continuous fodder production in various climatic conditions while maximizing the efficient use of available space.

Encouraged by the promising results, project leaders are considering expanding the initiative by establishing larger production units with the support of local authorities and the Chamber of Agriculture. This model has the potential to be replicated nationwide, especially as Morocco faces growing challenges in securing livestock feed due to drought and climate change.

The project has garnered strong backing from local officials, including the head of the Boulemane district, the leader of the Guigou command post, and Hamid Bouhnoun, the representative of the Chamber of Agriculture. Their support underscores the significance of developing this technology and extending its benefits to other regions within the province.…Read more by Mansouri abdelkader
