Wawa has abandoned its plan for a stand-alone store without gas pumps in Newark.

The city’s website shows Wawa withdrew its application on Jan. 5 to build a 5,915-square-foot Wawa store with 35 parking spaces at the former Boston Market site at 1050 S. College Ave.

It’s unclear whether Wawa has other plans for the site. Wawa did not respond to Delaware Online/The News Journal’s request for comment.

This is the second time Wawa has abandoned plans at this site. The company had proposed a small drive-thru Wawa on the lot in February 2023 and scraped those plans in September 2024.

Wawa moves forward with store and gas station across the street

While the Boston Market location Wawa is up in the air, the fast-food mini-mart chain still has plans to build a more typical location with gas pumps on the opposite side of South College Avenue.

Demolition crews knocked down the former Friendly’s next to Jersey Mike’s Subs last year to make way for a new Wawa at 1115 S. College Ave, according to the Newark Post.

The 4,736-square-foot Wawa convenience store would have a gas station canopy with 10 gas pumps.

The Wawa gas station would join an Exxon, a Shell station and a Sunoco in a less than half-mile stretch of South College Avenue.

Until that opens up, Newark residents will have to travel to one of the state’s more than 50 other Wawa stores for their made-to-order hoagies and quick-service food.
