Morning Sun girls basketball power rankings – week 5

Only three weeks are left in the high school girls’ basketball season, and teams are beginning to either click or struggle at this point.

Mid-Michigan area teams have again shifted positions in both conference play and the Morning Sun power rankings. This week’s list saw changes all over, with teams moving up, down, and remaining put as we enter week eight.

These rankings are based on overall records, conference games, weekly game results, and the Michigan Power Rating.

Games this week: Feb. 10 vs. Midland; Feb. 13 vs. Saginaw Heritage

The Lady Oilers continue to separate themselves with two quality wins, edging Midland Dow by one after handling Gaylord earlier in the week. Mt. Pleasant has now won six of its last seven and remains in control atop the SVL North race with balance on both ends of the floor.

A tough week for the Lady Irish, who split three games. Despite that, Sacred Heart is still unbeaten in conference play and remains the best team in the MSAC-West.

Games this week: Feb. 9 vs. Shepherd; Feb. 13 vs. Bridgeport

The Lady Panthers stayed steady with a hard-fought win over Freeland before running into a tough Bay City John Glenn squad. Alma continues to stack conference wins and remains firmly in the mix in the TVC-Red with consistency showing up night to night.

Clare bounced back nicely after a low-scoring loss to Meridian, taking care of Midland Bullock Creek to stay near the top of the JPC-1 standings. The Lady Pioneers continue to rely on defense and pace control as they push through a busy stretch.

Games this week: Feb. 10 vs. Saginaw Swan Valley; Feb. 13 vs. Saginaw Valley Lutheran

The Lady Jackets dropped two tough games against quality opponents but remain in the top five with a 0.481 MPR. Ithaca’s record reflects its battle-tested schedule, and opportunities remain ahead to regain momentum.

Games this week: Feb. 10 vs. Sacred Heart; Feb. 12 vs. Vestaburg

Breckenridge is the biggest jumper this week, as it continued to roll offensively, overwhelming Farwell and Carson City-Crystal to extend its strong run. The Lady Huskies have been dominant against lower-tier opponents and now turn their attention to key conference matchups.

Harrison hit a rough patch with back-to-back losses, but the Lady Hornets remain firmly in the middle of the JPC-2 pack. Consistency will be the focus moving forward as Harrison looks to close games more effectively.

Games this week: Feb. 9 @ Newaygo; Feb. 10 vs. Morley Stanwood; Feb. 13 vs. Howard Tri-County

Chippewa Hills put together a solid week with two wins, including a close one over St. Louis. The Lady Warriors are trending upward and showing improvement as they work through the CSAA-Red schedule.

Vestaburg rebounded from a lopsided loss to Sacred Heart by taking care of Coleman, staying competitive in the MSAC-West standings. The Lady Wolverines fell despite splitting the week.

A narrow win over St. Louis highlighted an otherwise challenging week for Shepherd, which dropped games to Freeland and Ogemaw Heights. The Lady Jays remain in the JPC-1 hunt but will need sharper offensive execution down the stretch.

Despite narrow losses to Chippewa Hills and Shepherd, St. Louis responded with a win over Harrison. The Lady Sharks continue to compete but are searching for consistency as the postseason approaches.

Fulton split its week, earning a win over Coleman before falling to Merrill. The Pirates remain in the middle of the MSAC-West standings and will look to build momentum with another busy stretch.

Montabella picked up a much-needed win over Carson City-Crystal but struggled against tougher nonconference competition. The Lady Mustangs continue to battle through a challenging schedule.

Games this week: Feb. 10 vs. Merrill; Feb. 11 vs. St. Helen Charlton Heston; Feb. 13 vs. Sacred Heart

Coleman snapped its skid with a win over Baldwin after dropping two conference games earlier in the week. The Comets are still searching for their first MSAC-East win as league play continues.

Games this week: Feb. 9 vs. Clare; Feb. 10 @ Manton; Feb. 12 vs. Lake City

Beal City ran into a pair of tough opponents in McBain and Roscommon and came up short in both. The Lady Aggies continue to gain experience with a young roster as the season moves forward.

Farwell remained winless after another difficult week but continues to push through a demanding conference slate. The Lady Eagles will look to finish strong with opportunities still ahead.…Read more by Shawn Robinson
