NEW ULM — The New Ulm Figure Skating Club’s 38th annual ice show “Oz on Ice” with a special “Wicked” performance, filled the New Ulm Civic Center Saturday.

More than 75 skating club skaters from ages 2-80 from New Ulm, Comfrey, Courtland, Fairfax, Gibbon, Hanska, Lafayette, Madelia, Mankato, Searles, Sleepy Eye, St. Peter, and Winthrop took to the ice, thrilling a packed house.

The two hour show with a 20-minute intermission included a number of 70s – era rock tunes such as “Goodbye Yellow Brick Road, Witchy Woman, One way or Another, Hey, Hey, We’re the Monkees, and Get On Down The Road.”

Director Katrina Bererich talked about the show in a recent Journal Lifestyle page.

“We love the story. So many kids are excited about the little characters they get to play” said Berberich.

“The Wizard of Oz” tells the story of Dorothy (Keira McCabe), a Kansas farm girl carried away by a tornado with her dog “Toto” and ends up in the beautiful land of the Munchkins.

Dorothy’s journey to return home includes finding the Great Wizard of Oz. On the way, she is joined by the Scarecrow (Adalyn Jensen), the Tin Man (Ellie Hoffmann), and the Cowardly Lion (Emma Hoffmann).

The group battles the Wicked Witch of the West (Sage Boyle) who wants Dorothy’s magic slippers.

What began as “The Wonderful Wizard of Oz,” a novel by L. Frank Baum in 1900, the story became a 1939 musical fantasy, “The Wizard of Oz.” More recently, the story was redone with the musical and film “Wicked.”

The production was filmed by New Ulm Cable Access Television (NUCAT) which will broadcast the performance in the coming weeks.…Read more by
