Reigning champions France saw their grand slam hopes ended by Scotland in remarkable fashion in the fourth round of Six Nations matches.

Les Bleus rallied late on to threaten an incredible comeback at Murrayfield, but the home side’s ruthless attacking display in the first hour saw them hold on to win 50-40.

It meant Gregor Townsend’s side were right back in the hunt to win the tournament, with Ireland also in the mix after a victory over rock-bottom Wales. England were already out of contention but faced the risk of finishing bottom of the pile after a famous defeat to Italy.

The final round of fixtures proved truly dramatic, with the very last kick of the entire competition securing France’s win over England and the defence of their title.

The Sporting News has all the results and the standings from this year’s tournament.

What is the Six Nations scoring system?

Four points are awarded for each win, two for a draw, and zero for a loss — but there are some bonus points up for grabs.

If a team scores four tries or more in a game, they are awarded a bonus point. Additionally, losing teams get a bonus point if their margin of defeat is seven points or fewer.

This means a winning team could take home either four or five points, while a losing team could earn zero, one, or two.

What is a Grand Slam in Six Nations?

There is another way to get bonus points on the board. If a team wins all five of their matches, thereby completing what is known as a ‘Grand Slam’, they are awarded three extra points. This has been achieved in 13 of the previous 25 editions of the Six Nations.

Ireland were on course for back-to-back Grand Slams before suffering a dramatic last-gasp 23-22 defeat to England at Twickenham in their penultimate match of the 2024 competition.

For England, Scotland, Wales and Ireland, a Triple Crown is achieved by winning all three of their games against the other ‘home nations’ from the British Isles.

There are also six individual rivalry trophies up for grabs, contested between the following teams:

Who has won the most Six Nations championships?

Including the Home Nations, Five Nations and Six Nations championships, England have won the most titles overall.

They have won the tournament 29 times (with a further 10 shared titles), ahead of Wales (28 wins, 11 shared titles).

In the Six Nations era, England and France are the most successful sides with seven trophies each, just ahead of Wales and Ireland on six. Scotland and Italy yet to win a title since the competition’s modern format was introduced.
