ATLANTA (ANF/Gray News) – Loved ones are remembering a 12-year-old Atlanta boy who was shot and killed inside his home. Police say a 14-year-old boy is facing a murder charge in connection with the case.

Family and friends came together Sunday night to remember 12-year-old Cameron Coney at Thomasville Park in Southeast Atlanta. They released balloons in his honor and held a candlelight vigil.

“He was everything,” said his aunt, Latosha Coney.

Cameron, or “Big Cam” as his family called him, was fatally shot inside his bedroom Saturday. His family says his friends came over to their house that afternoon and brought a gun with them.

“It was told that one of them pointed a gun at all of the friends in there, and when he got to Cameron – the gun was touching Cameron’s chest – and he shot. He pulled the trigger,” Latosha Coney said.

Atlanta Police confirmed Cameron was shot in the chest. A gun was recovered inside the home.

Police arrested a 14-year-old boy Sunday and charged him with murder in connection with Cameron’s death. He was taken to the Metro Youth Detention Center.

“We hope that we get justice for Cameron. That’s our sole hope,“ Latosha Coney said.

Cameron’s family says the 12-year-old, a student at Crawford Long Middle School, was silly and always joking. He loved to play football, eat and spend time with his mom and three siblings.

“He was a good kid. He was a great kid. He ain’t never been in no trouble,” said his aunt, Destinee Coney. “It ain’t fair. My nephew’s gone.”

A GoFundMe has been set up to help Cameron’s family with funeral expenses and other costs as they grieve.
