The Jigawa State Police Command has commenced “Operation Velvet” to enforce road traffic laws and curb violations across the state.

The special operation, which began on Monday, August 24, 2026, in Dutse Local Government Area, is aimed at improving road safety, reducing traffic-related offences and accidents, and protecting motorists and other road users.

The command’s spokesperson, SP Lawan Shiisu Adam, disclosed this in a statement on Monday, saying 17 vehicles were intercepted during the initial phase of the operation for various traffic violations.

According to the statement, the offences included covering vehicle number plates, unauthorised use of tinted glass and overloading.

The affected motorists were arrested by the enforcement team and subsequently charged before the appropriate court for prosecution.

The command said the operation was not intended to inconvenience law-abiding motorists but to promote responsible driving and compliance with traffic regulations.

“Operation Velvet is not intended to inconvenience law-abiding motorists but rather to ensure responsible driving, compliance with established traffic regulations, and the protection of lives and property on the roads,” the statement said.

The police said the operation would be extended to major towns and cities across Jigawa, warning that motorists found violating traffic laws would be arrested and prosecuted.

The Commissioner of Police, Jigawa State Command, CP Tijjani Murtala, urged motorists, commercial drivers, tricycle and motorcycle riders and other road users to comply with traffic regulations and avoid reckless driving.

The CP also called on members of the public to support the operation by providing information on persistent traffic violations that could endanger lives and property.

The command reaffirmed its commitment to “professional policing, public safety, the prevention of road traffic offences, and the protection of lives and property” across the state.…Read more by Colins Dubem
