The nameplate lives on today after no less than seven generations, albeit the current one now belongs entirely to Mercedes-AMG – except for the Mercedes-Maybach version introduced a couple of years ago. Anyway, the R232 iteration introduced in late 2021 has become the 2+2 roadster counterpart of the second-generation AMG GT sports car launched in 2023 solely as a fastback coupe.
Despite its name, the Mercedes-AMG SL Class can even be had with a 2.0-liter inline-four turbo engine churning out 375 hp in SL 43 entry-level form with RWD. There are also SL 55, Maybach SL 580, plus SL 63 and Maybach SL 680 models using the M177 bi-turbo V8 engine with 469 or 577 horsepower, which is way more appropriate for the elegant roadster.
As for the flagship, the company offers the SL 63 S E Performance with the 4.0-liter V8 mixed with a PHEV setup and rocking no less than 805 horsepower thanks to the electric assistance. But, on the other hand, there’s no coupe, as Mercedes-AMG doesn’t dare trespass on GT’s territory. No worries, some people aren’t so worried about cannibalization.
For example, the members of the imaginative guild of digital car content creators dwelling across the parallel universes of vehicular CGI such as Abimelec Arellano, a virtual artist better known as “abimelecdesign” on social media, who has prepared the newest wishful thinking project in the form of a cool grand tourer model.
More precisely, the pixel master recently had a quirky dream of a Fox Body Ford Mustang with an AMG body kit, fitted snugly back in the CGI days when the Mercedes division was still independent. Then, of course, he also decided to work on a full-blown Mercedes-AMG model and chose the SL-Class. The CGI expert believes that the fresh SL “is a great-looking car, and ever since it came out, I’ve been itching to see it sitting low.”
As such, his latest unofficial, hypothetical design project is a Mercedes-AMG SL lowered appropriately on big-lipped TIS Wheels and also featuring a hardtop treatment to morph it into a proper closed-off grand tourer. The car is dressed in a fancy shade of burgundy with matching faces for the chrome rims, and it certainly feels like it’s the early 2000s all over again.
By the way, the feeling is accentuated by the black and wood veneer interior treatment, which also features a PlayStation 2 console sitting in the glove box compartment’s place and hooked to the massive central screen for some vintage PS2 (it was launched in 2000) playtime.
