Remembering the life of Eleanor DeLong Johnson

Eleanor DeLong Johnson, 81, of Chattanooga, passed away Monday, March 23, 2026.

Born and raised in St. Elmo, Eleanor graduated from Girls Preparatory School. She attended the University of Chattanooga where she received a Bachelor of Social Work and was an active member of Alpha Deta Pi.

Eleanor dedicated 50 years of service as a social worker with Family and Children’s Services, where she made a lasting impact on countless lives through her compassion, wisdom, and unwavering commitment to helping others.

Eleanor was a devoted member of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, where she actively participated in the handbell choir, altar guild, and flower guild. Her faith and church community were central to her life and brought her great joy.

She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, William L. Johnson, Jr.; her parents, Nell Mae and Marshall DeLong; and her sister, Donna DeLong Shull.

Survivors include her daughter, Melissa Johnson Cross; her son, Andrew DeLong Johnson and his wife, Lizabeth Emenecker Johnson; and her cherished grandchildren: Ellie Grace Cross, Lillian Hensley Sims, Caroline Abigail Johnson, William Douglas Johnson, and Jack Phillip Johnson. She is also survived by several nieces and nephews.

Eleanor will be remembered for her kindness, her dedication to her family and community, and the quiet strength with which she lived her life.

Visitation will be Saturday March 28th from 12:00-1:00 pm at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church with a funeral service at 1:00 pm. Interment will follow in Chattanooga Memorial Park.

Donations may be made in her honor to St. Paul’s Episcopal Church.
