Georgia Neyenesch Markley – San Diego Union-Tribune

Georgia Markley passed away peacefully on May 14 at Country Manor in La Mesa. Georgia Markley passed away peacefully on May 14 at Country Manor in La Mesa.

She is survived by her three children, daughter Kim Markley Shaw, and sons Don and Doug; four grandchildren Katie Shaw Bullock, Lucas Shaw, Jackson Markley and NualaBel-Anu Markley; and two great- grandsons, Henry and JJ Bullock.

Georgia was born and raised in San Diego,attended Sherman Elementary School, Memorial Junior High, and graduated from San Diego High and San Diego State University.She was a member of Kappa Delta Sorority, and later served as an alumni advisor.She married fellow San Diego High and SDSU alum Jim Markley in 1953, and they lived in La Mesa until Jim’s passing in 2016.

While in high school Georgia worked at the family print shop, and her lifelong enjoyment of horse racing began during a summer job delivering the Del Mar racing programs to the track in the morning, and bringing the next day’s forms back to the shop to be printed overnight.

After college, Georgia taught physical education at El Cajon Junior High before starting her family.She was active in the La Mesa community, coaching Bobby Sox softball for many years; involved in school PTA’s, including serving as president of the La Mesa Junior High School PTA in the early ’70s; and was an original member of La Mesa’s Senior Volunteer Patrol.

Georgia returned to teaching as a substitute teacher in the La Mesa Spring Valley District, and later as a teacher’s aide in special education classes at Hilltop Junior High.
