WANA (Jul 12) – Iran’s Foreign Ministry said Iran and Oman held talks in Muscat on Saturday to discuss future arrangements for managing maritime traffic in the Strait of Hormuz, with both sides agreeing to continue political, legal, and technical consultations to reach a shared framework.
Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baghaei said the meeting brought together the foreign ministers of Iran and Oman, along with legal and technical delegations from both countries, to coordinate navigation and shipping arrangements in the strategic waterway. The discussions focused on ensuring the safety and security of maritime traffic while respecting the sovereign rights of the two coastal states, applicable international law, and Article 5 of the Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding.
Baghaei said Iran believes that any future framework for managing traffic through the Strait of Hormuz should be developed through consultation between the two coastal states, taking into account recent regional developments and their security implications for international shipping.
According to the Foreign Ministry, a Qatari delegation also attended part of the talks. Qatar has played a mediating role in recent negotiations between Iran and the United States.
During the visit, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi met with Omani Foreign Minister Badr Albusaidi to discuss bilateral relations, regional developments, and the implementation of Article 5 of the Islamabad Memorandum. The two ministers also exchanged views on practical mechanisms to ensure the safe passage of ships through the Strait of Hormuz.
The Omani foreign minister reaffirmed his country’s commitment to diplomacy as the best way to reduce regional tensions and expressed hope that the full implementation of the Islamabad Memorandum would contribute to greater regional stability and maritime security.…Read more by hejazi
