Joy Diffendal, 84, passed away in Carlsbad, CA on August 3, 2026, following a long and courageous battle with Alzheimer’s. With her during her peaceful passing were her brother Steve, godchild Paige, and friend Helen.

Joy was born in Baltimore, MD, to Katherine Smithson Diffendal and Joseph Gloyd Diffendal, both of whom preceded her in death. After graduating from nursing school, Joy continued her education, receiving BSN and MBA degrees. Her first position was as an RN at Johns Hopkins Medical Center.

As a young woman, Joy moved to California and had a successful career as a health care executive at Mercy Hospital San Diego, Oregon Health & Science University, UCSD Medical Center, Eisenhower Medical Center and St. Joseph of Orange Medical Group. She was well respected in all her roles as a talented problem-solver, who brought kindness and compassion to her decision-making.

Upon retirement, she shifted focus to caring for animals and served on the founding board of directors of Animal Samaritans. Joy never stopped rescuing dogs and cats and finding good homes for them. She was actively involved in the Palm Desert Chamber of Commerce, Mama’s House and started her own business with Optivia, helping others achieve better health.

Joy is survived by her brother, Steve Diffendal, his wife Donna and many friends whom she called family. Her ready smile and offer of help to anyone in need will be missed.

A private celebration of life will be scheduled for a later date. For those wishing to honor Joy, donations in her memory can be made to any local animal rescue

organization you would like to support.…Read more by San Diego Union-Tribune
