Swindell takes triple gold twice at indoor meets

V.I. Track and Field Team athlete Sofia Swindell claimed three gold medals twice over the past week, and set a USVI age-group record, at a pair of indoor track and field meets in New Jersey and Pennsylvania.

Swindell, a junior at The Lawrenceville (N.J.) School, set the USVI record during one of her gold medal wins at the N.J. Varsity Classic meet in New York on Monday, Feb. 5.

Swindell won the girls 55-meter hurdles in a USVI under-20 record of 8.23 seconds, which also set a school record. She also set another school record in winning the girls 200-meter dash in 24.57 seconds, and won the girls triple jump in 11.11 meters (36 feet, 5.5 inches).

Five days later, Swindell repeated her “triple gold” performance at the MAPL Invitational indoor meet in Mercersburg, Pa., on Saturday, Feb. 10. She won the girls 60-meter dash in 7.25 seconds (after winning her prelim race in 7.41 seconds), the girls 55-meter hurdles in 8.32 seconds and the girls triple jump in 11.12 meters (36 feet, 6 inches).
